Psalm 35:1-10 "O Lord, oppose those who oppose me. Fight those who fight against me. Put on armor, and take up your shield. Prepare for battle, and come to my aid. Lift up your spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Let me hear you say, "I will give you victory!:" Bring shame and disgrace on those trying to kill me; turn them back and humiliate those who want to harm me. Blow them away like chaff in the wind--a wind sent by the angel of the Lord. Make their path dark and slippery, with the angel of the Lord pursuing them. I did them no wrong, but they laid a trap for me. I did them no wrong, but they dug a pit to catch me. So let sudden ruin come upon them! Let them be caught in the trap they set for me! Let them be destroyed in the pit they dug for me. Then I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be glad because He rescues me. With every bone in my body I will praise Him: Lord, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the helpless from the strong?Who else rescues the helpless and poor from those who rob them?
The historical record would appear to be speaking of those men of war who were serving Saul. There were a number of men in Saul's army who were jealous of David's success against Goliath, who rather than rejoicing in Israel's success over the Philistines were turned to being jealous of David's success. Kind of like the men who set out to outgun the paid gunmen who rolled into town to kill someone for pay.
The result of this deranged anger of these men of war who were constantly seeking to locate David's army and then defeat them. Notice in verse 5,6 David's attempt to defeat them with God's aid of blowing them away in the storm, and then tiring out by making their way hard by being dark and slippery. In other words rather than seeking to bring harm to them, to make the difficulties of chasing after him so hard that they give up their intended accomplishment of harming David and his men.
Then he promises that he will seek to bring praise to God with the same intensity that was necessary to run from these armies. Sometimes we are forced to run from adversity and hardship to such great strength that once we succeed we collapse. Then rather than shouting, or singing out praise, we fall down in exhaustion and then fail to remember where the strength came from to avoid being forced into warfare. Here David is promising that he won't forget who this strength came from, but will rather put the same effort in praising the Lord, as he gave to avoiding defeat.
SO GO WITH GOD my dear one a never forget to give your all, in praising His matchless name. Don't forget in the fray of the battle to forget to speak often of His powerful intervention in times of conflict.
