How many gallons does a ten-gallon hat hold? Well, if you guessed 3/4 gallon you were right. The word galan actually was the Spanish word for bands on the hat. Hatmaker John Batterson Stetson made the ten gallon hat become popular wear for the cowboy.
Prov. 25:11 “Timely advice is lovely, like golden apples in a silver basket.”
Wise time honored advice that is witty & pertinent is as beneficial as a decorative gold apple arranged in a silver basket.
There are several other verses that illustrate wise advice:
Prov. 15:23 “Everyone enjoys a fitting reply; it is wonderful to say the right thing at the
right time!”
Prov. 24:26 “An honest answer is like a kiss of friendship.”
In my lifetime probably two of the most witty & thoughtful people were:
Mr. Brady my middle school drama teacher, who was full of humor & wit
Senator John N. Kennedy from Louisiana here is one of his quotes:
We must never forget that the highest form of appreciation is not to utter words;
but to live by them.
This verses imagery of beauty describes well chosen words, including words of rebuke.
Aside from my dad, President Ronald Reagan was one of the wisest, most witty speakers that I have enjoyed.
Who in your lifetime stands out with wisdom words, and why?
So Go With God for he will fill your mind & heart with words of wisdom & yes even humor. After all, He is our source of humor. If you look to the scripture with that intent, humor & wise thoughts they will jump out at you.
He is creative; He created Platypuses, Yeto crabs, Irrawaddy dolphins.
Look at sarcasm in 1 Kings 18:16-36 Elijah & false prophets - spent all day & nothing
happened, Elijah spoke one request & and God sent fire from heaven & even
vaporized the rocks
Absurdity in Num. 22:22-41 a talking donkey
Pranks in 1 Sam. 5:1-5 God through the ark knocked Dagon on his face
Funny Jonah 2:10 great fish spit Jonah up on the beach, just think of that view
Why not think of one, These are just a few I saw, see if you can think of any others.
You asked about one in my life that was both wise and witty. I immediately think of my mother. She wasn't perfect but she did love her Lord with ferocity and friendship, with a deep longing to please and serve Him. She didn't know it, but when she walked into room, people lit up. They knew they were in for a good time, but they also knew it came from a deep wellspring in connection with the Spirit that was very fulfilling to all. How many times she shared with me her longings, failures, hopes, and words of wisdom because she yearned for me to know and love her Savior. Thank you, Mama.
