Challenge:

Psalm 29:1-11 "Honor the Lord, you heavenly beings; honor the Lord for His glory and strength. Honor the Lord for the glory of His name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of Hos holiness. The voice of the Lord echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The Lord thunders over the mighty sea. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. The voice of the Lord splits the mighty cedars; the Lord shatters the cedar of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon's mountains skip like a calf; He makes Mount Hermon leap like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord strikes with bolts of lightening. The voice of the Lord makes the barren wilderness quake; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord twists mighty oaks and strips the forests bare. In His Temple everyone shouts. "Glory!" The Lord rules over the floodwaters. The Lord reigns as king forever. The Lord gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them in peace."

This passage declares that God alone is the God of gods and then it declares the ways that His creation declares this to be truth:

Vs. 1,2 declares His supremacy over Heavenly beings

Vs. 3-9 emphasizes His power over the "forces of nature"

Vs. 10,11 affirms His power over humanity

In this chapter the writer speaks about seemingly every possible disturbance that we may encounter in life. Every force that we are aware of in this creation and then seven times He reminds us that His voice is there, speaking into our lives the certainty of His power, care, love, and yes even peace in the middle of the greatest disturbances known to humanity.

He ends up in verse 11 emphasizing two qualities that only He can pour out over our lives:

His forceful, mighty, and all incompassing strength

His undefinable, indescribable, overwheming peace

As a young boy we lived in the small town of Carterville, MO. for most of the time we lived there it only merited one yellow blinking light. I remember when our police man (Charlie Brown) was given a red light that could be placed on the roof of his car held there by a magnet when he needed to move quickly across town.

A tornado came through our area of the city, it sounded like a freight train, and picked up houses and moved them, tore out trees, ripped up our main street stores, it even knocked over our very own out house. The wind was so forceful that it drove a piece of straw through the cherry tree next to our one room house.

I can remember how dad was out of town on business and our neighbors invited us to share their underground shelter. As dad came home I remember driving throughout our community and being overwhelmed with the force that was displayed through all of the destruction around our area.

Then after we went home our grand parents invited us over for ice cream and peach pie. The last thing we did at the end of our visit each time we came over was to pray together. As a young boy this time seemed like an eternity for my grandfather would pray as it seemed, around the world. I still remember my grandmother who usually remained quiet in this prayer time, burst out in tears of joy giving thanks to God for His protection for us grandkids. At the time I didn't understand the richness of this love she had expressed, but today I have a fuller understanding of her feelings.

SO GO WITH GOD my dear one, for no matter the events of your life, and the severity that may come your way, rest in His strength and peace. When you come together in praise at church be sure to lift high your voice in praise and glory to God for His faithful care that He showers on your life, for it is demonstrated in a new way each and everyday.
